Frequently Asked Questions

What does CLAMS stand for?

Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing (CLAMS) is a non-profit, cooperative association of libraries on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. We share materials and resources.

Why do I have a CLAMS library card and not just a Mashpee library card?

When you register for a card at the library, the Mashpee Library becomes your “Home Library,” and you are considered a “Mashpee” patron. The library card we issue to you allows you to borrow books and other materials from all CLAMS member libraries. This is the reason our cards are commonly known as “CLAMS cards.”

May I return my materials to other library locations on the Cape?

Absolutely!  Materials borrowed from CLAMS libraries, except museum passes and inter-library loans, may be returned to any member library. (Inter library loans are books and other materials borrowed from non-CLAMS libraries.) When you return your materials to any other CLAMS library location, they will be checked in and considered “returned” on that date.
All of the libraries on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are members of the CLAMS network except for the Sandwich Free Public Library. They are a member of the Old Colony Network. You can return Sandwich Library materials to a CLAMS library, and they will be returned through the state delivery system, but they will not be credited on your account as “returned” until they are actually checked in at the Sandwich Library.

Can I request a book or other item that CLAMS doesn’t own?

Yes. If none of the CLAMS libraries have the item you are looking for, you can use the Commonwealth Catalog to request the book from another library in the state of Massachusetts.  You can use the Inter Library Loan system to request items that aren’t available in any Massachusetts libraries. Call our the main desk and ask for the Inter Library Loan specialist for more information.

Can I pick up a reserve item for a family member or friend?

You can pick up reserve items being held for another person if you have their physical library card to use at check-out.  If they have completed and signed a Shared Access form you will have also have permission to pick up items on their behalf.  A copy of the Shared Access Form can be downloaded here.

Are food and drink allowed in the library?

Non-alcoholic beverages in covered containers and water bottles are allowed in the library.  Please use extreme care not to spill or stain the carpets and furniture. Drinks should not be enjoyed when using library computers or technology equipment.  Light snacks and refreshments are permitted in the Conference and Event Rooms during meetings and programs, but they should not be consumed in other areas of the library.

Are pets allowed in the library?

Pets or animals, other than service animals, are not allowed in the library.

Do you have a notary public on staff?

No.  Town Hall has a notary public in the Town Clerk’s office.

Do you have a public fax machine?

No. The library does not have a public fax machine.  The UPS Store provides faxing services for a fee.  They are located in Mashpee Commons .
