Join the Mashpee Library, as well as libraries and bookstores across the state, for this year’s Massachusetts Center for the Book Reading Challenge! The Reading Challenge gives people of all ages a chance to set and meet the goal of reading a book each month from a specific category, and to share their experience within their reading community.
Here’s how the challenge works: First, choose a book that fits each month’s challenge. When you have finished the book, visit www.massbook.org/readingchallenge and fill out a short form to share your reading experience. On the last day of each month, two readers will be chosen to win a free book. Additionally, at the end of the year, participants who completed all twelve months will be entered into a drawing to win a tote bag full of books!
The categories for the 2026 Reading Challenge are:
January: A book about or set in winter
February: A book outside your usual genres or spin the genre wheel on the Massachusetts Center for the Book website: massbook.org/genre-wheel
March: A book featuring an unlikely friendship
April: A short story or essay collection
May: A book set in Massachusetts
June: A book with a sympathetic villain
July: A book found at a Little Free Library, tag sale, or used bookstore
August: A book that could be considered taboo
September: A book about a journey
October: A mystery, thriller, or ghost story
November: An adult classic you’ve never read
December: A book that connects to your heritage or cultural identity
If you are looking for book ideas or inspiration, stop by our second floor. When applicable, the library will display a selection of books for that month’s category. Good luck and happy reading!
